Ideally, we would sew our sweet pea seeds, outdoor Ideally, we would sew our sweet pea seeds, outdoors, and because we have a short growing season, we’re starting them inside so we have a better chance of getting them to the flower shop this summer. Now that the seedlings have popped out of the soil, It’s important to provide them with a trellis so they can continue to climb and grow. I’m using simple bamboo skewers. These should make it easy to transplant outside, and to train them up a taller trellis once the greater risk of frost has passed. Me against the T post. When we bought the farm la Me against the T post. When we bought the farm last year, we began taking down fences not necessary for our operation. This meant battling T posts, and we were NOT good at it. More than one was wrangled out and twisted. No matter how many times I went dancing around like a pole dancer, the T post was winning. A friend of mine sent me this tip earlier in the week and I put it to the test, removing T posts in an area where they are not needed. It worked like a charm. I hope this helps someone else too. As we change the fencing situation to support flower farming, instead of pig farming, this tip is going to save us so much time. Griff meets the chicks. We picked up the chicks o Griff meets the chicks. We picked up the chicks on Friday and they’re doing really well. Yesterday I took Griff into the pump house when I was checking on the chicks. He looked at me like mom what is going on? He sniffed each of the chicks as I checked their butts and then watched in disbelief as they pranced around in the brooder. I’m weeding again in the Hellebore field today. I’m weeding again in the Hellebore field today. It was much easier when the ground was still wet. Yet I persevere. This particular plant was uncovered a couple weeks ago. She’s a beauty. Curiousities about this plant: In earlier times, hellebores were used to forecast the weather for the following year, which is why they were called Oracle Roses. Mainly in the countryside, there was a tradition of putting twelve hellebore flower buds in a glass of water before Christmas, each of them representing one month of the following year. If a bud opened to a flower by Christmas Eve, the weather was predicted to be good for that particular month. If it did not open, poor weather was to be expected. Let’s uncover our Hellebores Also known as Lent Let’s uncover our Hellebores Also known as Lenten rose, these beauties are one of the very first to come up in perennial gardens, and with a mild winter like this, their foliage can even remain evergreen. Leaves are a leathery dark green and the blossoms themselves are also quite tough. So even though they bloom early, the blooms tend to be pretty long lasting. Ours are creamy green or deep purple. Our close friends were traveling to help their daughter move and were looking for someone to help take care of their chicks, seedlings, and existing chickens. PICK ME!!! These were friends from church and Potomac, Montana, where I’ve been serving the church for many years. Our family fell in love in a new, different way with the area, and also the possibilities of homesteading. A year ago we bought a forgotten flower farm and renovated the home. This year we’re resurrecting the flower farm and we’re adding chickens to the mix. The same friends ordered chicks recently and four are for us. I’ve gotten the brooder ready, we’re working on the chicken coop, and we are beyond excited. And just like that… If you ask our son what he’d like to have for dinner it’s normally one of two things. Tortellini or sushi. Now that we’re about 40 minutes from the grocery store I’m even more compelled to make things from scratch. I’ve never tried making tortellini, and I thought, “what’s the worst thing that could happen? The pasta doesn’t seal, and the filling ends up in the boiling water. Let’s do this!” We had really good luck and only one or two tortellini failed. There’s something about homemade pasta and the cheesy, herb filling was delicious as well. Woo hoo! Today was all about making progress outs Woo hoo! Today was all about making progress outside. Last year, most of my time was focused on renovating the house so that we could live in it. This year I need to create a balance of inside and outside. Last year, the weeds in many of the fields were overwhelming and felt out of control. I use the four wheeler and a harrow to clean out this field. One step in front of the other. This weekend we’ve accomplished very much. The hellebore field is half cleared. The peony field is also half cleared. A former pig pen has been semi controlled with the use of a harrow on the back of our four wheeler. Much, much dried grass from previous seasons has been raked up. We activated our burn permit for the very first time and controlled a burn of grasses, dropped pine branches, and stocks from weeds.
