My mom bought me this white porcelain set from Avon and added to it over the years. My husband added a few pieces to it since. I recently realized there are many pieces to this set I do not have. I have the most important ones though šŸ’› I enjoy taking each piece out of the box and appreciating the craftsmanship. Iā€™m not sure if it was Connie or Stanley that made them but I sure enjoyed having them. I havenā€™t made them that often, and theyā€™re easy prep! Iā€™m going to a friends place today with my family to share Thanksgiving , play games, and have an amazing meal. I softened the cream cheese next to the wood-burning stove. I purchased the petite snack crunchers, mild buffalo kosher dill pickles from Mount Olive. I bought the dreaded sliced cooked ham lunch meat that comes in the shape of a rectangle. I cut the ham in half lengthwise, added a blop of cream cheese, then added a pickle and rolled it up. I then inserted two toothpicks on each half and sliced each in half. I arranged them cut side out, on this beautiful Polish serving dish I received from my family for Christmas a few years ago. Have you made these appetizers? Or have you ever had them? Iā€™d say this is progress. When we moved our hou Iā€™d say this is progress. When we moved our house cats up to the farm in July, our gray cat, named Boynton, was very territorial with the farm cat, named Bagheera. We think part of it is that Bagheera gets to go outside and part of it is, even though Boynton was the runt of the litter, heā€™s got a really BIG personality. Over the last weeks, weā€™ve been working to transition Bagheera from being an outdoor cat to being an indoor cat. Heā€™s become very comfortable sleeping on the couch or sleeping at the end of the bed as you can see here. We noticed a pattern with Boynton, initially, where he would go and lay in the same spot where Bagheera hsd been, and to us, it was him trying to claim the space. We added cat pheromones to the mix about a week and a half ago. @therapetmd They say youā€™re not supposed to smell them as humans but Steve and I can smell it. Itā€™s not our favorite scent, but itā€™s not overpowering. There hasnā€™t been any hissing in the last 5 to 7 days, which we will take as a win. Iā€™m not sure if they are in proximity today because Boynton wants to intimidate or if heā€™s warming up to the new cat. That there is no cat wrestling, swiping, hissing, or pouncing helps me to feel like weā€™re making progress. What a whirlwind! Itā€™s been a sleep in, pull on What a whirlwind! Itā€™s been a sleep in, pull on cozy clothes, make a fire, skip the shower, have crazy hair, and find reasons to smile kind of day. Itā€™s been a number of years since I had a booth for my doTERRA business. I got lost after life experiences beginning in 2018. I spent last week trying to gather all the things I needed from the various spots weā€™ve stowed things as we were moving to the flower farm. I enjoyed a wonderful Friday and Saturday with people from the community who stopped and conversed, asked questions, and made purchases. I left my office an absolute disaster on Friday afternoon. Today, Iā€™m trying to pull it all back together, and find it gives me an opportunity to reorganize so I can find things more quickly next time I need them. Iā€™m grateful for fantastic lighting in the office, courtesy of Lloyd Electric. Whether Iā€™m working at the computer, sewing, working on a mosaic canvas - the lighting in here is perfect. Compassion or Empathy In my bible study today Iā€™m reading about compassion. Sometimes I get compassion and empathy mixed up. So I decided to read about them and I found this helpful: BrenĆ© Brown differentiates between empathy and compassion by saying that empathy is a skill set, while compassion is more of a belief system. Here are some other ways that Brown and others explain the differences between empathy and compassion: Focusļæ½Empathy is about understanding and sharing the emotions of others, while compassion is about wanting to help. Skill Empathy is a skill that can be taught and observed, while compassion is more of a belief system that people commit to. Connection Empathy can help people feel included and connected, while sympathy can create disconnection. Action Compassion requires action to help someone, while empathy doesnā€™t always involve action. I made a peach pie. I love making pie and I wanted I made a peach pie. I love making pie and I wanted to make this one extra special since it was for a fundraiser, so our local eighth graders can go on a trip to Florida. I used my standard piecrust recipe, which includes butter, not shortening. I used peaches that my husband canned a couple years ago that were harvested in Missoula. I added lots of pastry leaves to make it look extra special. A friend at church this morning let me know her granddaughter saw this pie and said it was the one she wanted to bid on for her mom. šŸŖµ Letā€™s make fire starters šŸ”„ Weā€™ve been šŸŖµ Letā€™s make fire starters šŸ”„ Weā€™ve been starting a fire most mornings since itā€™s chillier. We know itā€™s going to get colder. šŸ˜Š I was looking for a way to not only get the fire started but to get them started hot fast. Using newspaper works really well and it burns hot. Itā€™s harder to find newspaper these days. Also with paper I find I need to pay closer attention to the fire. These fire starters are easy to make, burn for a long time, and help the kindling and the logs more quickly burn hot. One thing Iā€™d do different is to add a wick of sorts to make them easier to catch the flame. Currently I put a little paper under it (I know šŸ™„) to help it catch the flame. Secondly, Iā€™d like to find beeswax blocks, thinking theyā€™re probably less expensive. Or maybe soy wax, which I read produces less soot. Hey! šŸ”„Preserving horseradish šŸ”„ We noticed several šŸ”„Preserving horseradish šŸ”„ We noticed several patches of horseradish on the property when we purchased it in May. Today I spent time harvesting a patch to preserve horseradish to have on hand for various things. One of the pieces looked like a claw. šŸ˜³ I cleaned all of the pieces, then I peeled them and put them in some cool water with lemon juice to maintain its bright white. Then I chopped it and ran it through the food processor. The horseradish is so tough it really gave our food processor a run for the money. I ended up having to chop it into smaller pieces by hand which meant I needed to put a respirator on and glasses. For real! The, pungency of the horseradish is out of this world. I have a contact lens in only my left eye, and ended up closing my right eye to stop the stinging. Iā€™d have worn goggles if I had any. šŸ˜† The finer chopped horseradish was pulverized the food processor. Yay! I split the shredded horseradish between two quart jars, added about a teaspoon of salt, a tablespoon of sugar to each, and then I added about cup of rice vinegar to one and a half cups of pulverized horseradish. I learned the longer you wait to add vinegar the stronger the horseradish is. It took me so long to chop and pulverize it, that Iā€™m kind of afraid to eat it. What is Fire Cider? Iā€™ve been watching people ma What is Fire Cider? Iā€™ve been watching people make it for years and recently saw a jar brewing on my friend Jaymeā€™s kitchen counter. When I got my Azure Standard order this month, there was an article about it and a recipe. I decided it was time. Evidently Rosemary Gladstar at the California School of Herbal Studies popularized this concoction in the 1980ā€™s, suggesting this tonic can warm your body while boosting immunity. They are said to be especially helpful for respiratory illnesses, including sore throat and sinus drainage. Iā€™ve been using home remedies for almost 24 years and have experienced benefits from the individual ingredients, why not try them brewed together? And fermented foods offer probiotics. Yes please! Letā€™s add this to our natural remedies toolkit. So I got myself a BIG jar and added: Chopped onion I had so much chopped onion, I went with 2 jars LOL Minced garlic Grated horseradish from our farm, and ginger and turmeric roots Finely chopped cilantro, oregano, and dried thyme, rosemary and sage from a friendā€™s homestead. Then hot peppers and peppercorns Ā¼ cup local honey Juiced lemons and sliced lemons Top with apple cider vinegar with the mother. Now they need to brew for 4-5 weeks. Iā€™ll shake the jars 2 times a day. Then Iā€™ll strain out the solids and put the Fire Cider in new jars. You can use Fire Cider diluted with warm water for a tea, added to a water in a water bottle to sip throughout the day, take a shot followed by a tall glass of water, add to sparkling water, or to fresh-squeezed juices. Lots of white hairs too. Steve thinks Bagheera won the kitty lottery. -Surrendered in the dark of night, in April 2022 by who knows who, because they were moving. -Adopted as a mouser by former property owner summer/fall of 2022. Just in case we get stuck this winter, I wanted to make sure we have food stores on hand. I ordered bulk oats, kidney beans, black beans, long grain, rice, fusilli pasta, and turbinado sugar. We got a wheat berry grinder, and sadly the wheat berries are on backorder. Hopefully next month. The airtight lids for the 5 gallon buckets did give me a little bit of trouble. šŸ¤Ŗ I improvised for a bit by using my weight to snap them on. Then I figured it out. šŸ˜‚ Getting through this first winter successfully feels really important. One of the things I miss about our old place is the comfort of knowing what to expect. This is a whole new game.
