Mommy my ear hurts
For many years hearing this phrase caused me to experience a feeling of dread. Often what followed were fevers, tears, doctor visits, medications, and missed days of work. In our home stress, sleepless nights, exhaustion, and hopelessness abounded.
Today I have more tools. I am able to head off ear discomfort in its tracks in the comfort of my home. It feels wonderful to go from hopeless to empowered.
Want to know what I do?
This simple remedy has taken care of ear discomfort every single time so that we haven’t had to seek help from a professional, and of course we would, if we needed to.
The first thing I do is turn to a product nearly everyone has in their homes – Peroxide. When I was told to pour a small amount into the ear, I was reminded of the doctor at summer camp doing this for me when I had swimmers ear. Aha!
We always treat both ears because congestion is many times the precursor to ear discomfort, and congestion is an equal opportunity experience.
It’s easy! Have your person lay down on their side with a pillow and pour 5-10 drops (or ¼ – ½ capful) of peroxide into the ear that is up. If you are working with a small child, you can tell them that the bubbles will tickle and help the owie. While the peroxide is doing its work, gently grab the top of the ear and tug gently towards the top of the head. Then gently grab the back of the outer ear and tug gently towards the back of the head. Next, gently grab the ear lobe and gently tug down towards the chin and towards the back of the head. Finally, place your finger in the little indentation behind the earlobe and gently massage. You may repeat this a few times. Sometimes you’ll see the bubbles which prove to our skeptical minds that the peroxide is working. Sometimes you don’t see the bubbles – and in my experience, the peroxide is still working. Take a hand towel and have your person roll over so that the peroxide exits the ear. Then repeat on the other side.

The next step we use at our house is to take dōTERRA Tea Tree essential oil (aka Melaleuca) and apply it topically in the front of the ear and down the jawline. Then apply it topically behind the ear and down the neck over the lymph nodes there. It is a good idea to dilute the dōTERRA Tea Tree essential oil with dōTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil for your young people, aging people, and for those with sensitive skin. The last thing I do (for those who will leave it there) is add a few drops of dōTERRA Tea Tree essential oil to a cotton ball and stick it in the outer ear. Essential oils are volatile and the vapors will gently diffuse into the air in the inner ear for additional support.
Sounds easy right?
It is! You may safely repeat this throughout the day and night as needed. In my experience 1-round of the peroxide and dōTERRA Tea Tree essential oil reduces discomfort, which supports relaxation, rest, and sleep for everyone.
